The debate over these two projections confuses me, because it’s essentially over which is the superior display map, for which purpose they both suck. Yes, Mercator has terrible area problems, but Gall-Peters has some ridiculous shape distortions at polar latitudes. Either way, Greenland is a lie because rectangular maps are weird.
The moral of the story: use a globe.
